Final Step: Reflection

After you have completed all of the assessment and review activities, I want you to take a moment and reflect on how your grammar abilities are developing. Consider the things that you seem to be doing a nice job with, and the things with which you could still use some practice. Look at the list below when you are writing your reflection. You could craft your reflection by just doing down the list and rating your ability for each skill on a scale of 1-5, and then write a few sentences explaining, or you could just craft a paragraph (4-6 sentences) that expresses your grammar abilities. *See my example post for more information.

The skills we have covered this semester:
  • Sentence subjects (simple and complete)
  • Sentence predicates (simple and complete)
  • Direct Objects
  • Indirect Objects
  • Parts of Speech identification
  • Verbs and the different types
  • Verb Phrases
  • Adjectives
  • Adverbs
  • Prepositions and prepositional phrases
  • Predicate nominatives
  • Predicate adjectives

  1. Mrs. Sampson's example reflections:

You could do your reflection this way:

*I have rated myself on each grammar skill using a scale of 1-5 (five being very good, and one being very bad).
    3-Sentence subjects (simple and complete)
    3-Sentence predicates (simple and complete)
    3-Direct Objects
    3-Indirect Objects
    5-Parts of Speech identification
    4-Verbs and the different types
    5-Verb Phrases
    5-Adjectives
    4-Adverbs
    2-Prepositions and prepositional phrases
    3-Predicate nominatives
    4-Predicate adjectives
I need the most work with prepositions and prepositional phrases (I gave myself a 2), and I could also use some work with predicate nominatives, subjects, predicates, direct objects, and indirect objects. I feel that I really understand the parts of speech identification, as well as the various types of parts of speech. I think I'll study more on prepositions before the exam.

OR, you can do your reflection this way:

After taking all of these assessments and thinking about the practices in class, I'm feeling really good about my parts of speech identification as well as my knowledge of adjectives, verbs, adverbs, and predicate adjectives. I'm still a little unsure about subjects and predicates, as well as direct and indirect objects. Most of all, I need to work on prepositions. I am still getting a lot of those wrong, and I'm not good at finding them in sentences. I know I will study prepositional phrases before the exam, but I think I'll also try to practice subjects, predicates, direct objects, and indirect objects.

  2. My reflection is that io need to work on subjet and predicates, indirect objects, and ajectives. I did ok on the quiz but io can still improve before the test. The activities really help me clear things up with indirect objects. And the praactice just helped over all with all the areas I thought i needed to work on.

  8. I worked on Predicate nominatives, indirect objects, and predicate adjectives. Doing the practice work helped me understand the things I got wrong on the quiz. My strengths are everything I didn't get wrong spacifically prepositional phrases.

  19. I can figure out what the simple subject is, but I have a harder time distinguishing the predicate. I understand predicate nominatives and adjectives very well and I understand indirect objects. Verb phrases are difficult because it is hard to distinguish the different verb types from eachother.

  21. Of the various areas of grammar we have focused on, I feel that I am strongest with parts of speech identification, direct and indirect objects, sentence subjects and predicates, and prepositions and prepositional phrases. All of these I find somewhat easy and I do not struggle with them. I am fairly good with verbs and verb phrases, adjectives, and adverbs. These I do pretty well with, and have little to no trouble. The ones that I need to work on are the predicate adjectives and nominatives, as I have trouble picking out which of the myriad adjectives and nouns in the sentence are the right ones.
